Best of Show

I was surprised and honored. My plate won Best of Show.

“From Mud to Magic” 2010 is a countywide non-profit juried ceramic art show sponsored by the We Can Make A Difference Foundation. Juried by Fred Olsen, an internationally known ceramic artist and author of “The Kiln Book”.   “Considered works should encompass traditional craftsmanship with innovative design providing strength to its overall from, function and/or merit.”  Pottery Northwest of Seattle  accepted an invitation to join the show, adding a professional and regional component to the show.

Describe the painting process if you

  2. Thank you.
The process is rather simple. Wax resist is painted where you see white, black slip is painted in the unwaxed portion, scratched and carved, called sgraffito, to reveal the white clay underneath. Some marking through he wax as well then black slip to show those marks.
    Simple yet effective.

  3. Awesome use of a circle, visually...I became aware of the compositional potential of circles in pottery through studying Mimbres bowls. Not that many potters seem to unleash that potential, but you're doing it here. Thanks for posting this! (I found it through the Plate a Day blog:http://aplateaday.blogspot.com/2010/10/504.html

  4. Thank you Kelly. This plate was a real surprise. The restraint was a challenge as I tend to want to keep working a design. Less is more.
